Game Key Activation Troubleshooting Guide

Modified on Tue, 18 Aug at 2:33 PM

We’re sorry you’re having trouble activating your game key. Most activation issues are easy to resolve, and this guide covers the most common causes and solutions.

Region Lock Errors

Some game keys are region-locked by publishers. This means the key can only be activated in certain regions.

When you purchase a game on Playsum, we automatically assign the appropriate key based on your location at checkout. This usually works smoothly, but issues can occasionally happen if:

  • You were traveling at the time of purchase
  • You were connected to a VPN or proxy
  • Your detected location did not match your Steam account region (Steam Store Country)

Common Error Messages

You may see messages such as:

  • “This product is not available in your country”
  • “The code cannot be activated from your region”
  • “This item is restricted in your country”

How to Fix It

1. Check Your Steam Store Country

Your Steam Store Country must match the region the key was purchased for.

You can learn how Steam regions work here: Steam Region Help Article

Please note:

  • Steam only allows region changes once every 3 months
  • Changing regions may require a payment method from that country

2. Disable VPNs and Proxies

If you were using a VPN or proxy during activation, disconnect it and try activating your key again.

VPNs and proxies can also cause the wrong regional version of a key to be assigned. We determine your location at checkout based on your IP address and automatically assign a key intended for that region.

If you’re using a VPN or proxy, your IP address may appear to be in a different country, which can result in a key for the wrong region being assigned to your purchase.

If you disable your VPN and purchase the game again, you should receive the correct key that will activate for your account. Just make sure to check first that your Steam Store Region matches the country you currently live in. You can also double-check that the game will activate in your country by using the Activation Checker on the product page.

3. Make Sure the Key Was Entered Correctly

Double-check for:

  • Extra spaces
  • Mistyped characters
  • Copy/paste formatting issues

4. “Duplicate Product Code” or “Already Activated” Errors

If Steam says the key has already been redeemed:

  • Make sure the game is not already in your Steam library (including in "hidden games")
  • Check your licenses page in case it's tied to your account but isn't currently visible

You can check your Steam licenses page by following these steps:

1.  Open Steam and click your username in the top-right corner

2.  Select Account details

3.  Click “View licenses and product key activations”

This will show a full list of everything that’s been activated on your account, even if it’s not currently visible in your library.

If the issue continues, contact us and we’ll investigate it for you.

5. Use the Activation Checker on the Product Page

Since publishers often region-lock game keys, we provide an activation checker on each product page. You can use it before purchasing to make sure the game can be activated in your country.

If you’re having trouble activating a game, it’s also a good idea to check whether your country is supported. Simply go to the game’s product page. Next to the price, you’ll see “Can be activated in [your region] – Check.” Click “Check” to view the full list of countries where the key can be activated.

Tip: We recommend checking this before purchasing, especially if you’re traveling, as these can affect the region detected for your purchase.
